Define School

We didn't do much "sit down" work in the last week or so. On Tuesday I was trying to get myself motivated and was talking to Ms. D without really thinking about what I was saying  "Well," I said "let's get focused. Let's do something educational."

She got a panicked look in her eye "Ah, wait a minute...what do you mean by "educational"?"

"I mean, go outside, record the interesting things you see in your nature journal, log and review some of the books you've been reading, take that weather book you love and write out and explanation for me about why it hails, all that Shakespeare stuff we've been reading and watching, compile it in your head and write out to me what you like about it, work on some of your vision therapy, get out the 3-D books and look at them, practice your OT exercises, your yoga, design you garden, review your math, make up some grammar exercises for ME to do, ...you know...just some focused stuff. Have a plan."

She looked terribly relieved "Oh. PHEW. I thought you wanted to do school."

That is so funny--last week my kids spent the week "playing school" and then insisting I "teach" them. So I got out their school books and spent about an hour on some things that were age appropriate (or kid appropriate depending on the kid) and then they were off doing something else. In fact they started working on building a tree house, and writing a play, and baking, and some other random stuff.:)

that is funny. kids are strange about what is and isn't school. mine will read history or shakespeare for fun, but is horrified if I suggest assigning her a book to read as part of schoolwork.

Something is in the air or the water.... Owen has been way more cooperative than usual about many of the the things I suggest.

That's funny! I think we as adults are like that with some things too, for example, exercise. If it's fun, we forget that we're getting a workout. Or if it's fun, we forget that it's a job or 'work'.
